International Conference "Energy in Buindings" (Athens, October 13, 2012)

The future of our societies depends on the balanced management of their resources. The quality of the environment we live in is of paramount importance (October 13, 2012).

Hence, the environmental impact of building engineering, landscape design and building waste management must be considered a top priority for us all.

Energy, which affects these concepts, is at the heart of the process. Its management, whether in an urban, suburban, agricultural or industrial environment, requires a collective effort and commitment from all involved disciplines.

In order for any energy building design to succeed, targets set during planning must be based on the rules and principles of sustainable development. Such long-term and in-depth projects require the implementation of efficient and easy to use tools in order to ensure the coordination of all sectors with the same objectives.

It is our responsibility as professionals and policymakers to support and increase awareness in our field in order to achieve any improvements regarding building energy consumption and to protect not only the existing urban environment, but also its entire natural surroundings. This will guarantee a better living environment for all future generations.

The Symposium is aimed at architects, engineers, policymakers and all those involved in the management of the urban and building environment. It is supported by the Swiss Embassy in Athens and benefits the collaboration of the State of Vaud in Switzerland.

Purpose of the symposium is:

  • To raise awareness of the importance of a systematic bioclimatic approach on the quality of life and energy savings. To demonstrate that these actions can improve quality and comfort all year round.
  • To highlight that collaboration and coordination among participating professionals, planners, developers, architects and engineers is essential from the initial stages of design. To convince all parties involved that the process of building and renovating is a global and collective act.
  • To stress the importance of calculating and interpreting the energy balance of a building, a neighbourhood, a city or a concept.
  • To highlight the measures and the attitudes which reduce energy needs in an active or passive way.
  • To raise awareness of the choice of materials: their origins, grey energy, ecological footprint, CO2 emissions, lifespan, and need for renovation and maintenance.
  • To show that the paths of development and research in the urban space is the way to increase the quality of life in relation to protecting nature.
  • To apply these principles to the renovation of not only existing but also historic buildings, without modifying their aesthetic qualities.
  • To highlight the importance of targets such as near zero energy by using various models like the Minergie label and others.
  • To explain how a modern society by addressing the issues of sustainable development, can convince and involve each citizen in their space and landscape.
  • To show how other societies are considering the sustainable development in order to benefit from their experiences.

Topics included in the October 13, 2012 symposium will be addressed by the following speakers:

  • Dr. Dimitris Aravantinos (GR) Assoc. Professor, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Topic: Thermal Bridges & Surface Condensation
